Kerosene’s history

The North American Gas Light Company trademarked the word kerosene in 1854. They were the only company who were able to use the name kerosene commercially. It has now been given a general trademark which can be used to describe heating oil/paraffin.

What is kerosene?

  • Used in domestic and commercial sites
  • Created from the distillation of crude oil to form liquid mixture
  • Stored in a blue drum or blue labelled container to distinguish it
  • Used to heat your home, power jet-engine aircrafts and as a cleaning solution
  • Before electricity, it was used in lanterns to source lighting fuel
  • Clean burning characteristics mean higher heat output at lower costs
  • Typical kerosene oil is a clear, yellow shade, meaning lower odour

Is heating oil and diesel fuel the same?

Both diesel and heating oil no. 2 are midlevel or midweight distillations of petroleum that produce around the same amount of heat and can be burned by the same systems. White diesel (derv) can therefore be used as a heating oil.

However, it’s important to note that as of 1st April 2022 when the new red diesel rules came into place, gas oil is no longer permitted to be used as a heating fuel in commercial buildings. Businesses must instead use white diesel or industrial heating oil.
